HERMANN LASCH
(German, 1861-?)

Hermann Lasch studied in Dusseldorf and was primarily a landscape painter.  He began exhibiting in 1890 and worked both in France and Germany. This dynamic work, done in 1898, shows consierable post-impressionist influence.

NATAN GUTMAN
(Polish, 1914-1990)

Natan Gutman trained in Warsaw and also in Paris.  His time in France exposed him to the work of the Fauves and other School of Paris artists.  Gutman also worked extensively in Venice and even Scandinavia.

Carsten Strom studied in Berlin and Copenhagen.  He was a painter, illustrator, and ceramicist.  Strom worked extensively in Malmo and is known in part for children's book illustrations.  This is an outstanding modernist work done relatively early in the artist's career.

BORGE NYROP

Borge Nyrop studied at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen, at Vermehren's Art School, and with L. Simon in Paris.  A landscape painter, he was awarded the Sodring Prize in 1907 and the Neuhausen Prize in 1911.  He is represented in the Rudersdal Museum.  This is a rare plein air work by the artist, who is better known for his large studio works that often feature farmers working in their fields

KNUT NORMAN
(Swedish, 1897-1977)

Knut Norman studied in Stockholm and was a protιgι of Anders Zorn, who paid for much of his schooling.  Norman spent most of his career in Venice, where he produced many scenes of the sun-drenched canals.  He also worked in Paris and painted in a distinctive post-impressionist style.

MANNER OF RICHARD WILSON

This is a fine Victorian luminist painting done in the manner of Richard Wilson, R.A.  The work dates to c. 1860 and incorporates many of the elements favored by the 17th and 18th century romantic painters.  These include ruins, a resting traveler, and glowing skies.  The work retains its fine original ornate gold frame.

STANISLAV PETRASHEVSKI

Stanislav Petrashevsky studied in the Ukraine and worked primarily in Berdichev, Zitomar Region. Important shows included the All-Union Show in Moscow in 1959.  His work oftens shows the influence of French impressionism and post-impressionism.

SILAS MARTIN
(American, 1841-1906)

Silas Martin was a prominent Columbus, OH portrait, still life, and landscape painter.  He served as a musician in the Civil War and returned to Columbus immediately after the war's end. He made his living primarily as a portrait artist and many of his works now hang in the Ohio State House.  In 1899, he joined the faculty at Ohio State and was one of George Bellows' instructors.  He is represented in the collections of the Columbus Museum of Art and the Ohio Historical Society, among others.  This work retains a fine period frame that is likely original to the work.

PERCY C. BOVIL

Percy Bovil was a late Victorian genre and landscape painter who worked mostly in Cornwall.  He exhibited at the Royal Academy beginning in 1883 and also showed at the RBA and the ROI. This work retains its fine original frame.

Terhell was a Dutch landscape painter painter who worked extensively throughout the Netherlands.  His works are often in the poulder tradition with buildings and windmills along a canal.  Terhell painted under at least two pseudonyms, including that of "Ch. Petit".

The sister of prominent artist Charles Branwhite (1817-1880) and sister-in-law of artist William Muller (1812-1845), Rosa excelled in a male-dominated profession and exhibited with the Royal Society of British Painters.  This fine work retains its original museum-quality frame and a hand-written exhibition label verso.
